Convert your FIRE 1099 file for IRIS

The IRS retires the FIRE system on November 19, 2026. From the 2027 filing season, 1099s and other information returns are e-filed through IRIS instead. If your accounting or payroll software only exports a Publication 1220 file, IRIS won't take it. This tool converts it into IRIS upload files, right here in your browser.

What's changing

For years, information returns like 1099s could be e-filed through the IRS FIRE system as a fixed-width file in the Publication 1220 format. The IRS retires FIRE on November 19, 2026. From the 2027 filing season, information returns are e-filed through IRIS.

A lot of accounting and payroll software only exports the Publication 1220 file. That leaves you with a file IRIS won't accept.

How it works

It runs in your web browser:

  1. Choose your Publication 1220 file, the one you would have uploaded to FIRE.
  2. It checks the file against its own totals, shows every form, and lists anything to check (name splits, missing state codes, foreign addresses).
  3. For an exact match, choose the blank template you downloaded from IRIS (Upload CSV with Form Data); its header row is used as-is.
  4. Download the IRIS CSV files: one form type and payer per file, up to 100 forms each, the most IRIS submits at a time.
  5. You upload those files in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal and file.

It runs entirely in your browser. Your file, with its SSNs and TINs, is never uploaded to me or anyone else.

It converts 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-G, 1099-K, 1099-S, 1098 (mortgage interest), 1098-T (tuition) and W-2G for tax years 2022 and later. Need another form? Email me and I'll add it.

No FIRE file, just a spreadsheet of contractors and what you paid them? Use Spreadsheet to IRIS 1099-NEC; the same license covers it.

What it doesn't do

You still file through IRIS yourself. That needs an IRIS Transmitter Control Code (TCC) from the IRS, and getting one takes weeks. Apply for it now, whether or not you use this tool.

Convert your file Free preview. $49 to download the IRIS files for one payer.

Questions

What is free and what costs money?

Checking and previewing your file is free. Downloading the IRIS CSV files takes a $49 license for one payer for the 2027 filing season, with as many forms and files as you need.

What if I want my money back?

Email tyler@leducsystems.com within 30 days for a full refund if it doesn't work for your file.

Why choose my IRIS template?

IRIS rejects a CSV whose header row doesn't match its template exactly, and the IRS only publishes the templates inside the portal. Choose the blank one you downloaded and its header row is used word for word. Without it, I use the column names from the IRS's published formatting guidelines.

What about corrected returns?

The IRIS CSV templates have no field for corrections, so corrected (G or C) records are set aside and listed. Make corrections in the IRIS portal itself.

Who isn't it for?

If you file only a handful of forms, you can type them straight into the IRIS Taxpayer Portal. If your software already files through IRIS or exports IRIS files, you don't need it. And it doesn't replace the IRIS TCC: you still need your own.

What happens to my file?

Nothing leaves your computer. The conversion and the checks run in your browser, so the SSNs and TINs in your file are never uploaded. Payment is handled by Stripe, which gives me your name and email. I never see your card.

Is this tax advice?

No. It converts the data already in your file into the IRIS format; it doesn't decide what to report. Check the preview, and the forms in IRIS before you submit. If you're unsure what belongs on a form, ask your tax professional.
