How to limit quantity per order on Shopify

I'm Tyler, and I make LeDuc Order Limits. To limit the quantity per order on Shopify, or to require a minimum order quantity, you need rules that checkout itself enforces. Otherwise a shopper can use Buy it now or an edited cart to get around them. This page covers what Shopify does by itself and how my app fills the gap.

The built-in way

As far as I know, Shopify doesn't have a built-in setting for a maximum or minimum quantity per order on most plans. The common workaround is to say so in the product description ("limit 2 per customer") and cancel or adjust orders afterwards. That relies on shoppers reading the note and on you catching the exceptions.

Some themes limit the quantity box on the product page, but a limit that lives only in the theme can be skipped with Buy it now, express checkout buttons or an edited cart. To be safe, the limit has to be checked at checkout.

With LeDuc Order Limits

  1. Install the app from the Shopify App Store. The checkout rule switches on automatically.
  2. Click Create limit rule. Set a minimum, a maximum or "sold in multiples of" (for example cases of six for wholesale).
  3. Choose what it applies to: products, variants, collections, tags, vendors or all products. Optionally apply it only to, or to everyone except, customers with a tag.
  4. Optional: in Order limits, add whole-order limits on item count, subtotal or weight, and cap items in total from a collection.
  5. Reword the messages shoppers see if you like. Shopify's checkout enforces every limit, so Buy it now and express checkout can't skip them.
  6. Optional: turn on the Order limits app embed in your theme to show the limit by the quantity box on product pages.

FAQ

Are limits per order or per customer?
Per order. A limit applies to each cart and checkout; it doesn't track how much one customer has bought over time.
How much does it cost?
Free for 2 limit rules plus whole-order limits. Pro is $7.99/month with a 14-day trial, for unlimited rules.
Can shoppers get around the limits?
Limits are checked by Shopify's checkout, not only the theme, so Buy it now, express checkout buttons and edited carts can't skip them.
What if two rules cover the same product?
The strictest wins: the highest minimum, the lowest maximum and the largest multiple.
