How to add back in stock notifications to Shopify
I'm Tyler, and I make LeDuc Restock Alerts. To add a back in stock notification on Shopify, you need a Notify me button on sold-out variants, a place to keep the emails people leave, and something that emails them when stock returns. Shopify themes don't do that on their own, so this page covers the manual way and the app way.
The built-in way
Out of the box, a Shopify theme shows a sold-out variant as "Sold out" and disables the Add to cart button. It doesn't ask the shopper for an email address, and it doesn't send anything when you restock.
You can do it by hand: add a contact form or a sign-up form to the product page, collect the emails, and when you add inventory, write to those people yourself. That works for a handful of products. It stops working when you have many sold-out variants, because you have to keep track of which shopper wanted which size or colour and email each of them every time.
The other route is an app that adds the button and sends the emails. That's what I built.
With LeDuc Restock Alerts
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store.
- On the app's home page, click Turn it on, then save your theme. A "Notify me when available" button now appears under Add to cart when the chosen variant is sold out. There are no theme code edits.
- A shopper picks the sold-out variant, clicks Notify me when available and leaves their email.
- When the variant is back in stock, the app emails them with the product photo and a link straight to the item. Shopify's inventory updates trigger alerts within seconds, and every waiting item is re-checked every 10 minutes as a safety net, so a missed update delays an alert instead of losing it.
- Optional: in Email settings, set the sender name, reply-to address and subject line. Emails show your store name as the sender, and replies go to your inbox.
- Check the app's home page. It shows when stock was last checked, every alert sent, and a Most wanted list of the sold-out items shoppers are waiting for.
