Checkout terms checkbox after Scripts and checkout.liquid
I'm Tyler, and I make LeDuc Terms Checkbox. On Shopify Plus, a required terms checkbox at checkout used to be custom code in checkout.liquid, often next to Scripts. checkout.liquid stopped working on the information, shipping and payment pages on August 13, 2024, and Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Here is how a terms requirement works now.
What the old approach looked like
Shopify Scripts themselves never showed a checkbox; they changed prices, shipping rates and payment methods. Stores that wanted a required checkbox added it to checkout.liquid or to the cart template, with JavaScript that kept the checkout button off until it was ticked. Buy it now and express checkout buttons skipped the cart, and with it the checkbox.
The Functions way
A checkbox is something the shopper sees, so it lives in the theme, in the cart page or cart drawer. Proof of the answer is saved on the order. The part a Function adds is enforcement: a cart and checkout validation function checks that the box was ticked, and if it wasn't, Shopify's checkout refuses the order with your message. That closes the Buy it now and express checkout gap.
With LeDuc Terms Checkbox
- Install the app. Check the text shoppers see and add links to your policies.
- Click Turn on in theme editor to switch on the Terms checkbox app embed, then save. It works with Online Store 2.0 themes.
- Open your cart. The checkbox sits above the checkout buttons, which stay off until it's ticked.
- Optional: choose Block checkout without consent so Shopify's checkout itself refuses an order if the box wasn't ticked.
Each order records the consent under Additional details, for example "Terms accepted: Yes, version 2, 2026-11-04 14:22 UTC". When you change the text, the version goes up and shoppers agree again. You can have up to 3 checkboxes, such as terms, age 18+ and a custom-made items notice; the free plan includes 1 checkbox in the cart.
The app records that a shopper ticked a box. It is not legal advice about what your terms must say. More detail: LeDuc Terms Checkbox and how it compares with CheckMate.
Status, November 2026: my Shopify apps are in Shopify App Store review and not installable yet. Each app's page will link to its App Store listing once it is approved.

In LeDuc Terms Checkbox's Block checkout without consent mode, no: Shopify's checkout refuses the order if the box wasn't ticked in the cart. In the plain cart mode, buttons that skip the cart are not stopped.
On each order, under Additional details, with the version of your text and the time in UTC.
No. The app records that a shopper ticked a box. What your terms must say depends on where you sell.
