Time tracking in Azure DevOps
Azure Boards has three number fields for effort on Tasks: Original Estimate, Remaining Work and Completed Work. They hold one total per work item. They do not record who did the work, on which day, or whether anyone approved it, so they cannot produce a timesheet or a billable-hours report.
What teams usually need
- Hours per person, per work item, per day.
- A weekly timesheet each person can fill in and submit.
- A lead who approves the week, and locked weeks after approval.
- Reports by person, area path, iteration and tag, exported to CSV for payroll or invoicing.
Doing it with Saguaro Hours
- An organization administrator installs Saguaro Hours from the Marketplace.
- Each person logs time from the Log time group on the work item form, or fills in the weekly grid under Boards, Timesheet.
- At the end of the week they submit; the approver approves or rejects with a reason.
- Reports filter by dates, person, area path and iteration path, group by person, work item or tag, and export to CSV.
Time entries are stored in your own Azure DevOps organization, in the extension data storage Microsoft provides. I do not run a server that holds them.
